HOW TO RUN AN ONLINE WORKSHOP (a workshop on workshops) 🔥
Gathering online still matters. Let's reclaim the zoom room! 💃
Someone sends you (maybe DYE lol 💁♀️) another link to another zoom, to another meeting, gathering, performance, or chat on a SCREEN. You throw your phone across the room in protest! Piper, NooOOoo!
Everything is *gestures broadly* awful, the world feels like it’s ending, and the phrase “share screen” while looking at your own face on a screen feels like the curse a greek god may cast upon a mere mortal. 🗿
Tbh, we don’t think it’s 100% the screens fault? The girlbosses came for the webinar, standardized and template-ficat-ed the whole thing and now every time you wanna “level up your Pinterest strategy” and pop in on a “free training” the words “cameras on and phones down” rings out in a 7 part harmony hellscape. BUT, gathering online helps you reach new folks, brings together people from across the land, and if you’re in business, maybe keeps those margins low 💸. Also, just straight up gathering online gives your community the flexibility, ease, and/or accessibility they NEED. The zoom room CAN BE a fun freak clown zone, and the world needs your online circus. 🎪
So let’s make the zoom room slay again, yah feel?
un-monopolize ur mind
We still believe in a zoom room, and we think you should too, cause like you being an artist and sharing your weird heart with the world is THE ANTIDOTE. We are riding another wave of internet and tech boycotting, rightfully so, and everyone is watching Adolescence right now in shock horror which is weird cause duh the manosphere ain’t great 🤷♀️ BUT! our hypothesis is that there is a time for app hopping, locking up our phones, or rejecting the screen, and there is a time for surrendering to the illusion of choice and using the screen for good. Great power meets great responsibility, etc. Can we actually make a “better” choice that truly helps us sleep at night, cuddled up to our badge of honor and “goodness”? Maybe, we don’t know your life. OR, can we use what we got, and get smart, weird, or MY GOODNESS…fun?!
be more weird, actually
Having ideas is embarrassing. Being an ideas person, even more embarrassing, sharing your ideas with the world, baby, that’s cringe factory 101.
Teaching online has been given the same cut/paste template everything else capitalism touches. And when everything starts to feel the same there is no texture, no EXCITEMENT, no interruption of a pattern. That’s boring, un fun, and… not the point of art?
Optimizing yourself (or your big beautiful ideas!!) to someone else’s template is obviously just not gonna work (we survived to tell the tale). While the clean-girl-trendy-millennial-biege is nice to look at on your Pinterest board, it’s void of YOU. Your 3D personality, the weirdo inside that can rattle on about 16th century costuming practices in film and television to your intro sewing class.
The freak mode that wants to yap about the indigenous plants growing on your local trails and how you can turn those into a free bug repellant. The baddie that wants to offer emo yoga flows to trans kids or the total nerd ready to teach a room full of corporate lawyers how to journal and collage about their feelings.
What we’re saying is, get weird my liege! 🤝

YOUR PEOPLE NEED A FUN ZOOM ROOM
PUT THE FREAK IN ONLINE MEET
YOUR SHOWER THOUGHTS 🤝 ONLINE WORKSHOP
Maybe you don’t think anyone will show up or care. Maybe you don’t think you can teach parasailing on a screen. Maybe you’re a teacher, educator, facilitator, who is starting to feel the burn of “I’ll send you the link!”. Maybe you’re a marketing gal and cannot stand to look at another Google sliiiIIiiide. Maybe you feel you have used every tool in your online gathering toolbox.
Maybe…you’re just straight up bored? Same Gabby, same.
the answer to the screen is, off the screen
As two artists desperately trying to stay the course, continue to gather, or as Twyla Tharp says, keep it moving, reclaiming the zoom room looks like:
Bringing in the body! Can we gather off screen, while on screen?
Go outside! Take your meeting on a walk, or your best friend’s yoga class to the park.
Soundscapes! We love some foley or just a good playlist.
Accessibility! Obviously check the boxes of the Zoom features, but can we bring in other accessibility practices? Invitational language! Visual cues! Somatics baby!
